A group of Republican lawmakers in Ohio are hoping to pass a bill that could see doctors who perform abortions tried for murder and given life sentences -- possibly even the death penalty.
Rep. Ron Hood, R-Ashville, one of the two lawmakers who introduced the bill, said he knows the measure would be challenged but considers it an opportunity to revisit Roe v. Wade -- the ruling that enshrined Americans' right to an abortion -- in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Still, it's unlikely the proposal would pass even Ohio's GOP-controlled Legislature. Twenty House Republicans have signed onto the bill, less than a third of the majority GOP caucus.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich recently vetoed a bill that would ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, concerned about the money the state would spend defending a law he believed would be unconstitutional. It's likely Kasich would veto this new proposal, too.
