A former officer of the US Navy Chaplain Corps tweeted on Monday that women should cover their shoulders during mass to protect men from impure thoughts, according to the Friendly Atheist.
“Ladies, a priest I know was forced on Sunday to ask a woman at Mass to cover her shoulders. Please help the priest to protect the purity of the men at the Holy Mass by choosing to dress modestly. The alternative is awkward for all involved,” said Father Kevin M. Cusick during a series of tweets in which he also attacked transgender and homosexual individuals.
The Tweet, which has since been deleted, received hundreds of comments, some of which linked the priest's concern with “covering up” to the church’s recent efforts to cover up sexual scandals within the organization.
Some, like Australian novelist Jane Caro responded that woman's shoulders are not provocative, and that men’s reactions are their own responsibility.
“I’m not backing down from this. I’ve thought about it, I’ve prayed about it and I’m not to going to engage in the endless Vatican II style debate that goes back-and-forth constantly and ends up nowhere,” said Cusick.
“What button should I push tomorrow? Suggestions?” he added.
