Michael Letts allegedly sexually abused a child over the course of seven years.

Michael Allan Letts, a Republican Senate candidate for South Carolina, was arrested on last week on child sex abuse charges, reports The State.

Letts, 56, was arrested by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office and charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 11 and 14, second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 16, and third-degree criminal sexual conduct, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Republican is accused of sexually abusing a minor child over the course of seven years, which began “by the subject having the victim sit on his lap and inappropriately touching her,” the incident report stated.

The victim reported the abuse in January and Letts’ arrest followed the investigation.

Last month, Letts filed as a Republican to unseat state Sen. Mia McLeod (D-SC).

Letts’ Linkedin profile said that he was a chaplain with the State Law Enforcement Division, but a SLED spokesman told The State that he is not associated with them.

South Carolina’s state constitution prohibits convicted felons from running for or serving in public office, and they can only file for public office again 15 years after their sentence is served, Chris Whitmire, spokesman of the South Carolina Elections Commission confirmed.
