When President Donald Trump chose to cancel House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s access to military transportation for her scheduled diplomatic trip abroad on Thursday, he not only effectively derailed her plans but also publicly announced what had been a closely guarded military secret.
The speaker's trip was a closely held secret, and a source familiar with the situation stressed that it is irresponsible and reckless for Mr. Trump to tell the world Pelosi was headed to a war zone — particularly since the president was just in Iraq and saw how much care had to be taken to keep the trip secret and secure, CBS News' Olivia Gazis reports.
Trump canceled the trip in retaliation for Pelosi’s request to postpone his State of the Union address until the partial government shutdown is over, citing security concerns, as it would force federal law enforcement officers to work without pay.
The Pentagon, however, is unaffected by the shutdown.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) — who often defends the president — said Trump’s move was juvenile and “inappropriate.”
"One sophomoric response does not deserve another," Graham wrote. "Speaker Pelosi's threat to cancel the State of the Union is very irresponsible and blatantly political. President Trump denying Speaker Pelosi military travel to visit our troops in Afghanistan, our allies in Egypt and NATO is also inappropriate."
