President Trump has insisted Paul Manafort meant little to the campaign; 2016 Newt Gingrich disagrees.

In August 2016, conservative commentator Newt Gingrich said former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort -- sent to jail Friday by a federal judge for alleged witness tampering -- essentially had been indispensable to President Donald Trump's campaign.

Trump said Friday the former campaign official had meant little to his presidential campaign, wrongly stating that Manafort was only with the election effort for 49 days -- in reality, it was more like five months.
