According to Huff Post, the Trump administration is attempting to give federally funded homeless shelters the ability to turn away transgender people.

In a press release on Wednesday, the National Center for Transgender Equality stated that the Department of Housing and Urban Development proposes weakening the Equal Access Rule, first published seven years ago to “ensure shelters and programs do not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

And while HUD Secretary Ben Carson said earlier this week that his department was “not currently anticipating changing the rule,” the advocacy group said, “He lied.”

The HUD’s proposed changes would allow shelters to account for “an individual’s sex for the purposes of determining accommodation within such shelters and for purposes of determining sex for admission to any facility.”

As a result, providers are allowed to factor in “privacy, safety, practical concerns, religious beliefs” when deciding whether or not to give accommodations for someone.
