According to The Hill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has promised to be the “Grim Reaper” for progressive policies if he remains the majority leader in 2020.
"If I'm still the majority leader in the Senate think of me as the Grim Reaper. None of that stuff is going to pass," McConnell said.
McConnell notes that if Republicans can win back the House, or if Trump can win the presidency again, “that takes care of it.” He says that regardless if Republicans lose the presidency, he will use his position to block progressive policies.
"I guarantee you that if I'm the last man standing and I'm still the majority leader, it ain't happening. I can promise you," McConnell said.
McConnell described the 2020 election as a fight between capitalism and socialism. He argues that Democratic proposals like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All are examples of socialism in the Democratic party.
McConnell also referenced the many Democrats who have voted “present” on the Green New Deal. "I don't want you to think this is just a couple of nut cases running around here on the fringe," McConnell said.
In the 2020 elections, Republicans will be defending 22 Senate seats compared to the 12 seats Democrats will defend.
"Are we going to turn this into a socialist country? Don't assume it cannot happen," he added on Monday. "It will all be in the hands, I think, of the voters of this country next year."
