Secretary of State Mike Pompeo talked around a question of whether the U.S. would defend a NATO ally.

Asked if the United States would send troops to defend NATO member Montenegro should the need arise, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo offered a lengthy answer about U.S. allies paying their fair share, adding that he wouldn't "get into hypotheticals."

President Trump has been highly critical of America's NATO allies, often complaining that they are taking advantage of the U.S. by failing to pay enough in return for American protection.
