Vice President Pence quoted Martin Luther King, Jr. in defense of President Trump's border wall—seen by many as racist.

On Face the Nation Sunday morning, Vice President used the words of Martin Luther King Jr. to defend President Trump’s actions in seeking funding for a border wall.

Quoting the “I Have A Dream” speech in stating “Now is the time to make real the promises of Democracy,” Pence called on Congress to compromise with President Trump to fund the border wall, framing it as a means of bettering the nation. However, there was a great amount of backlash on Twitter as many felt that it was wrong of Pence to use the words of Martin Luther King Jr. to defend a border wall which is seen as racist and is the ultimate reason for the longest-ever government shutdown.

“He inspired us to change through the legislative process to become a more perfect union and that is exactly what President Trump is calling on Congress to do.” -Vice President Mike Pence
