Triple Crown winner American Pharoah bit Vice President Mike Pence on the arm so hard that he nearly collapsed, Pence told a group of Republicans last week.
USA Today reported that Pence used the story as a metaphor as Republicans look toward retaking the House in 2020: “In our line of work, you’re going to get bit sometimes, but you keep fighting forward,” he said.
Pence visited the horse at Coolmore's Ashford Stud Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, in March. According to the vice president, he was bitten when he tried to grab Pharoah’s reins — but farm manager Dermot Ryan appeared to contradict Pence’s story.
He told McClatchy DC that such behavior from the horse is not typical: “If he gave someone a nasty bite, I’d know it.”
