McConnell: If The House Impeaches, The Senate Will Immediately Go To Trial
If the House Democrats vote to impeach President Donald Trump, the Senate will have “no choice” but to conduct a trial, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said.
According to The Associated Press, the Kentucky Republican made the remarks to NPR well before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the House would initiate impeachment proceedings, saying “if the House were to act, the Senate immediately goes into a trial.”

“Some Democrats have speculated that @senatemajldr Mitch McConnell would not hold a Senate trial if Trump were impeached by the House. But McConnell told @NPREmbedded - definitively and on the record - that if the House impeached, the Senate *would* hold a trial. 🔊LISTEN: https://t.co/kOD1PRUqoK”
Though some have argued that McConnell could in theory simply ignore impeachment articles from the House if he were so inclined, it is generally expected that Senate Republicans would hold the trial and then acquit the president.
