A new poll found that 55 percent of Americans say Trump should be impeached if the whistleblower allegations are true.

A majority of Americans support the impeachment of President Donald Trump if allegations are true that he withheld military aid to Ukraine in an effort to secure the country’s investigation into his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.

A recent YouGov poll found that 55 percent of adults in the U.S. would support Trump’s removal from office under such circumstances, Newsweek reported.

House Democrats officially began an impeachment inquiry on Tuesday, after a whistleblower complaint from the intelligence community was block by the White House from reaching Congress.

Forty-four percent of those surveyed by YouGov said they would “strongly support” Trump’s removal from office if he abused his presidential powers, and 11 percent said they would “somewhat support” the move.

Twenty-percent of respondents said they “strongly oppose” impeaching the president, and six percent said they “somewhat oppose” it, Newsweek reported.

Only 22 percent of those who said they “strongly support” Trump’s impeachment identified as Republican, while 66 percent identified as Democrat.
