Lindsey Graham Criticizes James Mattis, Claims Mattis Is Being “Unfair” To Trump
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said former Defense Secretary James Mattis’ condemnation of President Donald Trump’s response to nationwide protests over the police killing of George Floyd is “unfair,” according to Axios.
Graham’s defense of Trump and criticism of Mattis came during a Thursday interview with Fox & Friends.
The lawmaker directed his comments to the retired four-star Marine Corps general, saying: "To General Mattis, I think you're missing something here, my friend. You're missing the fact that the liberal media has taken every event in the last three-and-a-half years and laid it at the president's feet."
Graham continued that he is not saying Trump is “blameless” but that Mattis is “buying into a narrative that I think is, quite frankly, unfair."
Earlier in the interview, Graham had said: "You don't quite understand that from the time President Trump wakes up until he goes to bed, there's an effort to destroy his presidency. ... It is so fashionable to blame President Trump for every wrong in America.”
On Wednesday, Mattis gave a statement to The Atlantic that harshly rebuked Trump’s response to the protests and accused the president of making a "mockery of our Constitution."
Trump responded via Twitter, belittling Mattis and saying he was “glad he is gone!”
