Lawmaker Accused Of Sexually Assaulting His Students To Lead Education Sub-CMTE

Rep. David Byrd allegedly assaulted students aged 15 to 16 in the 1980s.

Last Spring, sexual assault allegations were released against Rep. David Byrd of the Tennessee State House which occurred during his time as a coach for the Wayne County High School women’s basketball team. Last week, the Tennessean reported that he has just been named the head of the education administration subcommittee.

Byrd worked as the school’s coach for 24 years then principal for eight. The sexual assaults took place against women aged 15 to 16 in the 1980s. Speaker Glen Casada stated that because the allegations took place long ago, that they are outside the purview of the House of Representatives.
