Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Wednesday that the offensive into northern Syria had begun.

According to Politico, Syrian Democratic Forces spokesman Mustafa Bali said on Wednesday that Turkish airstrikes in northern Syria have begun targeting “civilian areas,” causing "a huge panic among people of the region."

The U.S.-backed Kurdish-led force began bracing for the onslaught earlier this week, after President Donald Trump announced he was moving U.S. troops aside ahead of Turkey’s long-planned incursion into the region.

Also on Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Twitter that his offensive across the border had commenced.

Turkey considers the Kurdish forces a terrorist organization.
