Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, leader of the ruling centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is planning to resign, according to The Economist.

The announcement was a surprise for the entire country as many expected Karrenbauer to get the CDU's nomination for chancellor in the general election in the fall of 2021. Karrenbauer delivered the news on February 10th.

In 2018, Angela Merkel stepped down as head of the CDU, allowing Karrenbauer to step in at the role. After this move, most expected her to run chancellor. However, throughout 2019 different events left her weak and eventually ended her term.

The country is now wondering who will succeed Ms. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
