KAREN HANDEL WINS GEORGIA SPECIAL ELECTION

Republicans have kept Georgia’s sixth district in what was a monumental contest pitting perennial Republican candidate Karen Handel against fresh-faced Democrat Jon Ossoff. Many are looking to tonight’s results as a bell weather for 2018 Congressional races.

Mr. Ossoff had tied Ms. Handel to the unpopular president of President Donald Trump. In the winding days of the campaign, an outside group linked Mr. Ossoff to a congressional shooting that left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise critically injured. It is unclear what effect either strategy had on the final result.

The candidates could not have been more different. Whereas Mr. Ossoff had advocated for a living wage, during the debates, Ms. Handel came out strongly against one.
