Iowa Woman Admits She Purposely Ran Over Teen With Car Because She Was ‘Mexican’
A woman jailed in Iowa after hitting a teenage girl with her car has admitted to police that she hit the girl on purpose because she was “Mexican,” according to The Daily Beast.
Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, was charged with attempted murder, assault, operating under the influence, theft and public intoxication relating to the incident, as well as a separate incident at a gas station.
Police said the hit and run took place on December 9 near Des Moines, as the 14-year-old girl walked to Indian Hills Junior High School “on the way to an activity.”
Around 5 p.m., Franklin drove her 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee onto the sidewalk and “ran the girl over” before fleeing the scene, The Daily Beast reported. Police were able to identify Franklin “after asking for the public’s help, reviewing surveillance video, and speaking to the victim.”
The teenager suffered “numerous injuries”, police said, and spent a week in the hospital.
Clive Chief of Police Michael Venema said during a Friday press conference that “not only did Franklin admit to being the driver of the car that struck this girl, but also that she had done so intentionally.”
After telling investigators she ran the girl over because she was a “Mexican,” Franklin “went on to make a number of derogatory statements about Latinos to the investigators,” Venema said.
