Virginia Rep. Dave Brat was recorded telling a constituent that Republicans "lie all the time."

In audio reportedly leaked by one of his constituents, Virginia Rep. Dave Brat openly admits that he and his fellow Republicans — including House Speaker Paul Ryan — “lie all the time.”

Blue Virginia, a progressive group covering Virginia politics, shared the recording on its website Saturday.

The constituent can be heard lamenting that she hears politicians tell outright lies and wishes the Republican Party could “get back to a place that is respecting of itself,” a sentiment with which Brat appears to agree: “No, I know, I am with you,” he says.

But there is a problem, according to the lawmaker: “The problem is we’ve lied. Both of our leaders…Paul Ryan’s a nice guy, but he said he was going to repeal Obamacare. That’s a lie. It was not a repeal at all. And so, we lie ALL THE TIME. Everybody wants to go back to like the 50s when people were sane. But I don’t think so. It’s a war right now.”

Brat is in a tight race with Democrat Abigail Spanberger in Virginia's 7th District.

The Washington Post reported last week that Republicans have been losing their hold on the district, as victory margins continue shrinking.

> The latest poll shows Brat — a former economics professor who won the seat four years ago after a shocking primary upset over then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R) — virtually tied with Spanberger, a former CIA agent and federal law enforcement officer.
