The Washington Post reports that President Trump told congresswomen to “go back” to the countries that they came from. Strangely, three of the four women he seemed to be referring to were born in the U.S.
Trump tweeted, “So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!
One person that the tweets clearly refer to is Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) who was born in Somalia. Yet, Trump’s tweet mentions multiple “‘Progressive Democrat Congresswomen.” Other foreign-born Democratic congress members include: Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) who was born in India; Representative Debbie Mucarsel-Poweel (D-Fla.) who was born in Ecuador; Representative Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) who was born in Vietnam; and Representative Norma Torres (D-Calif.) who was born in Guatemala.
Trump’s reference to Pelosi is a nod to recent fighting between her and some of the members of her party. He is suggesting in his tweets that Pelosi would be glad to see the people she is at odds with leave the country.
Torres and Mucarsel-Powell were not involved in the fights and Murphy is a moderate who is on Pelosi’s side. Jayapal is the only person that Trump could plausibly be talking about. Jayapal was born in India, whose government is certainly not a “complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world.”
In fact, two weeks ago Trump said “India is doing very well as a country” while meeting with India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi.
Clearly, then, Trump was not referring to Jayapal. He is likely talking about the others who have been at odds with Pelosi, including Ocasio-Cortex, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and Rep. Ayanna Pressley. Although Ocasio-Cortez is the daughter of immigrants from Puerto Rico, she was born in New York. Tlaib was born in Detroit and Pressley was born in Chicago.
Evidently, Trump simply made a racist, nonsensical comment.
