In Michigan, Sixth Priest Arrested For Sexual Abuse, More Arrests Coming

Father Joseph Baker was charged with sexually assaulting a child under the age of thirteen.

Michigan Radio reports that on Monday, a sixth priest was arrested for sexual abuse after Attorney General Dana Nessel’s investigation into the Catholic Church. Nessel says that it’s “just the tip of the iceberg,” meaning more arrests will follow.

Father Joseph Baker was charged with criminal sexual conduct first degree, meaning he sexually penetrated a child under the age of 13.

"The thing that we see time and again is powerful institutions that are more interested in protecting their brand than they are in assisting people who are victims," says Nessel.

Baker is no longer permitted to represent himself as a priest in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Monsignor Michael Bugarin said that when the archdiocese received a tip about Baker’s crime, they reported it immediately to the attorney general and local prosecutor.
