According to Quartz, the richest families in Florence now are the same families that have been the richest families for the past 600 years.
A recent study by two Italian economists, Guglielmo Barone and Sauro Mocetti, compared Florentine taxpayers in 1427 to those in 2011. They found that the richest families are the same in 1427 as in 2011.
“The top earners among the current taxpayers were found to have already been at the top of the socioeconomic ladder six centuries ago,” Barone and Mocetti note on VoxEU.
The researchers also note that tracing wealth using surnames can be tricky, but surnames in Italy are very regional and tend to be passed on linearly. The rich in Florence remained rich for 600 years.
