David Holmes testified that Gordon Sondland said Trump was primarily concerned with what Ukraine could do for him.

David Holmes, a diplomatic official stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, testified to impeachment investigators that U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland told him President Trump “doesn’t give a shit about Ukraine.”

Sondland’s statement came on July 26 after Holmes overheard the ambassador speaking on the phone with Trump, The Washington Examiner reported. They were sitting in a restaurant in Ukraine with two other staffers when Sondland placed his cell phone call to the president.

According to Holmes’ testimony, “he could overhear what Trump was saying because Trump was speaking so loudly, Sondland had to move the phone away from his ear.” Sondland told Trump that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky “loves your ass,” and when the president asked if Zelensky would follow through with his desired investigations, Sondland responded that “he’s going to do it” and "will do anything you ask of him.”

Holmes went on to describe his conversation with Sondland after his call with Trump had concluded:

“Ambassador Sondland agreed the president did not give a shit about Ukraine. I asked why not, and Ambassador Sondland stated, the President only cares about, quote, unquote, big stuff. I noted that there was, quote, unquote, big stuff going on in Ukraine, like a war with Russia. And Ambassador Sondland replied that he meant, quote, unquote, big stuff that benefits the president, like the quote, unquote, Biden investigation that Mr. Giuliani was pushing.”

Holmes testified that he perceived investigations into former Vice President Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and Burisma “as being motivated primarily by a domestic U.S. political concern, because we were not aware of another reason, new facts, or other reasons to initiate a new investigation.”
