According to a new Emerson Poll of Democratic Primary voters, former Vice President Joe Biden is polling at 23%, former Texas U.S. Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke is polling at 22%, and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is polling at 17%. Mayor Pete Buttigieg is behind, at 8%, while Senator Elizabeth Warren is at 7% and former HUD secretary is at 4%. The poll was conducted April 25-28, 2019.
Spencer Kimball, Director of the Emerson Poll, said “it looks like Beto O’Rourke does not have Texas locked up. Bernie Sanders had trouble back in 2016 in southern states, including losing Texas by 32 points (65% to 33%) to Hillary Clinton, so it will be exciting to see who can capture the Lone Star state in next March’s key Super Tuesday contest.”
Voters between the ages of 18 and 29 are more inclined to vote for Sanders. Sanders has 34% of the votes from the age group. O’Rourke has 31% of the votes from the 31 to 49 age group and Biden has 29% of the vote among the 50 to 64 age group.
Although Trump has a 46% approval rating in Texas, he remains popular with his party. He leads against Republican opponent former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld 87% to 13%.
Trump is evenly matched with four of the top six Democratic 2020 hopefuls and he leads two of the others. Trump and Biden are almost perfectly even at 50% for Biden and 49% for Trump. Versus Beto, Trump has 50% and Beto has 50%. Sanders and Warren are also closely matched to Trump.
If the election were held today, Trump would likely lose Texas to a Democrat.
