Tennessee state Sen. Kerry Roberts said higher education is a "liberal breeding ground" and must be eliminated.

A Republican state lawmaker in Tennessee wants to see the entire higher education system in the United States disappear in an effort to “save America,” The Hill reported this week.

Colleges and universities are nothing but a “liberal breeding ground,” state Sen. Kerry Roberts said during a rant on his conservative radio show. The comments came as Kerry addressed a recent legislative hearing on abortion laws, arguing that an activists pro-abortion rights testimony was a "product of higher education.”

"If there's one thing that we can do to save America today, it's to get rid of our institutions of higher education right now and cut the liberal breeding ground off."

The Hill noted that Roberts, himself a graduate of Lipscomb University, approved a budget earlier this year that included funding for higher education — yet during his radio program, the lawmaker questioned by colleges and universities are funded by taxpayer money.

Republicans in general have grown more leery of higher education, an August Pew Research Center poll has shown.

Fifty-nine percent of Republicans hold negative views of higher education today, compared to 37 percent in 2012; and Republicans who had a great deal of confidence in America’s higher education institutions fell from 56 percent in 2015 to 39 percent in 2018.

Of course conservatives are scared of universities because they know that the smarter the public is the more they avoid Republican issues and candidates.

Old, white, college-educated male here. I've gone from Republican leanings while in my college years to liberal in my 60's. Never going back to that "conservative" party ever again.

I cannot process republican conservative stupidity. His backward kind of thinking and crazy mythological(religious) beliefs are typical of ALL right wingers, and sadly when people believe THAT BULLSHIT, it has a HUGE NEGATIVE EFFECT on society as a whole. There is only ONE reason to fear higher education: Stupid and ignorant people who have not had higher education are easier to lie to, and to indoctrinate with right wing authoritarian politics. These idiots are holding the rest of us back.

What a moron. It's fascinating and saddening that while other nations progress, ours is going backwards, thanks to these rigid Republicans who can never accept new ideas..

So the more that people know about other people and cultures, about the world around us, about science, about government and history, the more likely they are to vote liberal and Democratic?

Imagine that.

So... I don't get this guy. HE went to an institute of "higher learning" and became an accountant. Maybe he just wants to limit the fields that can be offered??
