GOP State Lawmaker: We Must Destroy Higher Education In Order To 'Save America'
In 2019, a Republican state lawmaker in Tennessee wanted to see the entire higher education system in the United States disappear in an effort to “save America,” The Hill reported last year.
Colleges and universities are nothing but a “liberal breeding ground,” state Sen. Kerry Roberts said during a rant on his conservative radio show. The comments came as Kerry addressed a legislative hearing on abortion laws, arguing that an activist's pro-abortion rights testimony was a "product of higher education.”
"If there's one thing that we can do to save America today, it's to get rid of our institutions of higher education right now and cut the liberal breeding ground off."
The Hill noted that Roberts, himself a graduate of Lipscomb University, approved a budget earlier this year that included funding for higher education — yet during his radio program, the lawmaker questioned why colleges and universities are funded by taxpayer money.
Republicans in general have grown more leery of higher education, an August 2019 Pew Research Center poll revealed.
Fifty-nine percent of Republicans held negative views of higher education last year, compared to 37 percent in 2012; and Republicans who had a great deal of confidence in America’s higher education institutions fell from 56 percent in 2015 to 39 percent in 2018.
