GOP Senator: Republicans Will Immediately Impeach Biden If He Becomes President
Iowa Senator Joni Ernst predicted that a President Joe Biden would be immediately impeached by Republicans upon taking office, citing his work fighting corruption in Ukraine as the offense, Bloomberg News reported this week.
During an interview with the publication, Ernst said: “I think this door of impeachable whatever has been opened. Joe Biden should be very careful what he’s asking for because, you know, we can have a situation where if it should ever be President Biden, that immediately, people, right the day after he would be elected would be saying, ‘Well, we’re going to impeach him.’”
On what grounds? The Republican senator said Biden could be impeached “for being assigned to take on Ukrainian corruption yet turning a blind eye to Burisma because his son was on the board making over a million dollars a year.”
Bloomberg noted that under President Barack Obama, Biden was tasked with fighting corruption in Ukraine, which involved leading the West’s efforts to have former prosecutor general Viktor Shokin removed from office.
That effort found success in 2016 when Shokin was fired, without objection from congressional Republicans — until Shokin began to claim Biden sought his termination in order to protect his son, Hunter Biden, who sat on the board of Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Shokin had investigated the company, and he claims that Biden was attempting to protect his son from the fallout.
Bloomberg noted that this allegation has been debunked, but that has not kept Republicans in Congress from pushing the theory in defense of President Donald Trump.
Asked for comment on Ernst’s remarks, the former vice president said her statements only reaffirm that this has always been about damaging his campaign. Biden told a Sinclair reporter in Iowa: “Doesn’t that make the case I’m making that from the very beginning that this was all about not wanting to run against me?”
