The Republican Party decided to adopt its 2016 platform for 2020, carrying over all of the anti-LGBT positions.

The Republican Party’s 2020 platform is being carried over from 2016, continuing the GOP’s assault on LGBT Americans.

  • The Democratic National Committee noted that “the RNC preposterously claims Trump has taken “unprecedented steps to protect the LGBTQ community” while simultaneously endorsing a platform that supports overturning LGBTQ+ rights.

  • The platform “condemns” marriage equality, which the DNC noted is supported by two in three Americans and has been legal for five years across the U.S.
GOP Platform: “Our laws and our government’s regulations should recognize marriage as the union of one man and one woman … We do not accept the Supreme Court’s redefinition of marriage and we urge its reversal.”

  • The GOP platform also supports President Donald Trump’s efforts to legalize discrimination against the LGBT community.
GOP Platform: “That same provision of law is now being used by bureaucrats — and by the current President of the United States — to impose a social and cultural revolution upon the American people by wrongly redefining sex discrimination to include sexual orientation or other categories.”

  • It is worth noting that the above mention of “the current President of the United States” is a reference to Trump’s predecessor, former President Barack Obama. The language is unchanged from 2016, as the RNC opted to roll over its previous platform for the current election season.

  • The DNC went on to note that Public Religion Research Institute polling shows that “72% of Americans favor laws that would protect LGBT people against discrimination in jobs, public accommodations, and housing, including 30% who strongly favor the policy.”

  • Republicans’ platform also “endorses Trump’s cruel and widely unpopular ban on transgender people serving openly in the military” — despite the fact that “71% of Americans support allowing openly transgender men and women to serve in the military.”
GOP Platform: “We reject the use of the military as a platform for social experimentation and will not accept or continue attempts to undermine military priorities and mission readiness.”

  • Lastly, the DNC observed that the platform “discrimination against LGBTQ parents, families, students, workers, individuals experiencing homelessness, and customers.”
GOP Platform: “We endorse the First Amendment Defense Act, Republican legislation in the House and Senate which will bar government discrimination against individuals and businesses for acting on the belief that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.”

  • PRRI polling showed in 2019 that 56 percent of Americans “said they oppose allowing a small business owner in their state to refuse products or services to gay or lesbian people if providing them would violate their religious beliefs, including 25% who strongly oppose this policy.”
