Mike Murphy said a Republican senator told him 30 Republicans would vote for impeachment if the vote was secret.

Mike Murphy, a former senior adviser to Mitt Romney and John McCain, told MSNBC on Wednesday that 30 Republican senators would vote to impeach President Donald Trump if the vote was secret.

Murphy said the transcript of Trump’s July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was more damning than the Mueller report in that it showed the president performing a “classic shakedown” as he asked for an investigation into his political opponent.

“The president of Ukraine asked for anti-tank missiles, because he’s got a problem — Russian mercenary tanks,” Murphy said. “And the president says, ‘well let me talk to you a minute some other things. You know, I’m a great friend of the Ukraine, except it hasn’t really been paid back.’”

The Republican said if GOP lawmakers protect the president in this situation, the party faces losing a number of seats, putting the Senate at risk of a Democratic takeover.

“I can tell you this,” Murphy said in closing, “one Republican senator told me if it was a secret vote, 30 Republican senators would vote to impeach Trump.”
