According to The Hill, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani demanded an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, accusing the 2020 Democratic candidate of having conflicting interests from previous connections with Ukraine.
In a tweet, Giuliani wrote, “Biden conflicts are too apparent to be ignored and should be investigated quickly and expeditiously. But the more important question is how deep and how high did the alleged Ukraine conspiracy go?”
Giuliani’s comments are in response to a Wednesday article published by The New York Times outlining Biden’s efforts during his position as vice president to urge Ukraine to discharge its most prominent prosecutor, who allegedly ignored corruption both in his office and among politicians.
In March 2016, Biden threatened to hold back $1 billion in U.S. loans unless the Ukranian government complied. Shortly thereafter, the Ukranian Parliament voted the prosecutor out of office.
The Times report renewed scrutiny over the fact that the former vice president’s younger son, Hunter, was on the board of an energy firm under the prosecutor’s investigation prior to his dismissal.
Biden’s team did not respond to requests for comment from The Hill.
In a statement to The Times, Biden said that he was not aware of his son’s position in the energy company until the media broke the story.
Giuliani’s accusations against Biden come a week after the Democrat launched his campaign, in which he has largely criticized the Trump administration.
