Fresno Bee: Nunes And His Blind Allegiance To Trump Is Real Danger To Republic

"[Devin] Nunes has relinquished his proper role as an independent representative of Congress..."

The editorial board for Rep. Devin Nunes’ hometown newspaper, The Fresno Bee, penned a scathing op-ed on Thursday calling on the California Republican to come clean about his activities in Eastern Europe and explain why he failed to recuse himself from the House Intelligence Committee’s impeachment probe, given his alleged involvement in Ukraine.

Nunes’ characterization as the impeachment inquiry — along with the Russia investigation and the Ukraine matter — as hoaxes did not sit well with the editorial board, which noted that “all three ‘hoaxes’ represent legitimate investigations into serious questions.”

"As has been true for nearly all of Trump’s first term, Nunes has relinquished his proper role as an independent representative of Congress and has instead acted like a member of the Trump 2020 re-election team," the editorial continued.

It then called upon the Republican to “come clean” on his phone calls with Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, and Lev Parnas, a Giuliani associate indicted earlier this year, or risk painting himself a “mere partisan.”

The phone calls in question became known after the Nunes’ committee released its impeachment inquiry report, which included phone records pertaining to Giuliani’s efforts to dig up dirt on Joe Biden in Ukraine.

Nunes made and received numerous calls from both men during that Giuliani and Parnas were working to have former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch ousted from her post. Their campaign was ultimately successful.

“To advance the cause of getting at the truth, Nunes should come clean on the phone calls and tell the House what was discussed,” the editorial board wrote. “He should also provide travel records to debunk the charge that he met in Vienna last December with the Ukrainian to get information that might hurt Biden; Nunes says he was in Libya and Malta.”

The board concluded: “Short of that, his actions continue to reduce him to being a mere partisan — the label with which he loves to tarnish his Democrat colleagues. Meanwhile, his 22nd District has critical needs, like easing the trade war challenges with China for farmers and helping those struggling in poverty. On such issues, Nunes has been absent; he’s been traveling to Europe.”
