President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy resulting in the separation of migrant children from their families is proof that the United States and Europe do not share the same values, according to France’s government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux.
According to Reuters, Griveaux told France 2 television that he doesn't want Europe – which faces a migrant crisis of its own – to head down the path the U.S. has chosen.
“We do not share the same model of civilization, clearly we don’t share certain values,” Griveaux told France 2 television.
The French official called images of children sitting in wire cages “shocking”.
Trump has used the situation in Europe in defense of his domestic policy, falsely stating Monday that crime in Germany is “way up” due to an influx of immigrants.
Government data show the claim is wrong and crime in Germany is coming down.
“Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!” Trump added, despite no evidence that European culture has been “strongly and violently” changed by migration.
