Fox News Heir James Murdoch Suggests His Dad’s Empire Is Ruining America
James Murdoch, the liberal black sheep son of Rupert Murdoch, warned that media outlets are strategically using disinformation to divide people and to shore up their own power, according to Vanity Fair.
“The connective tissue of our society is being manipulated to make us fight with each other, making us the worst versions of ourselves,” James said in an interview with the New Yorker’s Jane Mayer published Monday.
“There are views I really disagree with on Fox,” he added, noting that there are periods of time when he and his father do not talk.
Fox News, which often seems divided between the network’s straight news division during the day and its opinion-dominated programming in the early morning and at night, has been the main extension of the Trump re-election campaign, but has drawn criticisms for its internal schism.
Donald Trump frequently lashes out on Twitter when Fox provides airtime to Democrats, Democratic commentators, or even some of its own anchors who don’t step in line with the party, such as Shep Smith.
While James is continuing to evaluate how he’ll be involved in the media in the future, he is currently seeking to “distance himself from the conservative media outlets controlled for decades by his father,” according to sources for the FInancial Times.
“I just feel very lucky to have the opportunity at this point to make a clean break,” James said, “and literally have an empty slate.”
