Chris Wallace said over the weekend that he was told enough Senate Republicans might turn on the president to convict.

Fox News host Chris Wallace said on Sunday that a “well-connected” Republican told him there is a 20 percent chance that enough Republicans will vote for impeachment if President Donald Trump goes on trial in the Senate, according to The Hill.

Speaking with White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, Wallace said he had "talked to a very well-connected Republican in Washington, someone whose name you would know well, who says that if the House votes to impeach and it gets to a trial in the Senate, there's now a 20 percent chance enough Republicans would vote with Democrats to impeach the president."

Mulvaney countered that whoever said this to Wallace was not well-informed on the issue: "That’s just absurd. The comment about the 20 percent is just a person who clearly doesn't know what they're talking about."

Wallace raised the issue after pointing to Republican condemnation of Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops from northern Syria ahead of a Turkish incursion.

Mulvaney said the president knew his decision would be controversial but insisted that Trump is “extraordinarily popular at home.” He added that Republican lawmakers “have to go home eventually as well,” suggesting that distancing themselves from Trump might not be wise politically.
