Fox Host: Trump’s Tweets Weren't “Racist”- They Were Merely “Xenophobic"

Fox’s Brit Hume seemed to think that being xenophobic is more defensible than being a public racist.

Monday, Fox Host Brit Hume said that Trump’s tweets telling four Democratic congresswomen to “go back” to other countries were “xenophobic” and “politically stupid” but not “racist” according to Newsweek.

"Trump's 'go back' comments were nativist, xenophobic, counterfactul [sic] and politically stupid," Hume tweeted. "But they simply do not meet the standard definition of racist, a word so recklessly flung around these days that its actual meaning is being lost."

Sunday, Trump tweeted that four congresswomen should “go back” to the "totally broken and crime infested" countries "from which they came." He was referring to Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Ilhan Omar. Three of the four women were born in the U.S. and Omar was born in Somalia but immigrated to the U.S. when she was very young.

Hume experienced backlash on Twitter for his comments. Still, he stood by his original statement, tweeting a link to the Merriam Webster dictionary definition of racism. He wrote: "For those who asked what is my standard definition of racism, here is an answer: Note definition 1."
