“You have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours” -Jim Mattis
On Thursday, James Mattis announced his resignation from the role of Defense Secretary, citing his reason as policy differences between him and the president, according to CNN Politics. Thursday night, former US Defense Secretary William Cohen spoke about the resignation on CNN.
“The president has taken a wrecking ball to every pillar of stability and security we have erected over the past 60 to 70 years.”
Cohen spoke on the chaos that has been caused by the president’s decisions surrounding Syria and Afghanistan. He cited these decisions as going against Mattis belief in maintaining a reputation of credibility and reliability with the nation’s allies and for causing Mattis to resign.
"Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position," Mattis wrote in his letter to the President.
William Cohen also stated that James Mattis has never been known to quit anything and that the current situation in Washington was a breaking point for him. When asked if other members of the administration should step down in protest of the decisions, Cohen stated:
“If it comes to the point where you’re no longer pleasing to the president and you no longer feel that you can carry out his directives without something being antithetical to your core principles, it’s time for you to step aside.”
