DHS Secretary: Jesus, Mary, And Joseph Would Have Been Eligible For U.S. Asylum

Texas Republican Louie Gohmert (R-TX) asked DHS Secretary if the United States would have offered asylum to Holy Family.

On Thursday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) asked Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen if Jesus, Mary, and Joseph would be eligible for asylum in the US while fleeing from King Herod, according to The Hill.

Rather than focusing on today’s asylum policies and issues present today, Nielsen asserted that today, the Holy Family would be eligible for asylum in the United States.

“It is repugnant to me and astonishing to me that during Christmas … a time in which we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, a Jesus Christ who had to flee for his life with Mary and Joseph,” said Rep. Luis Guitiérrez (D-Ill.). “Thank God there wasn’t a wall that stopped him from seeking refuge in Egypt. Thank God that wall wasn’t there, and thank God there wasn’t an administration like this or he would too have perished.”
