Democrats’ Star Witness Lt. Col. Vindman Set to Testify in Impeachment Hearing
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a recipient of the Purple Heart, will testify in the House impeachment hearing Tuesday about his alarm at President Donald Trump’s request that Ukraine investigate his political rivals, according to The Washington Post.
Vindman, who serves in the White House as the top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council, told House lawmakers that he believed the president crossed a “disturbing” line when he asked Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky for a “favor”, which entailed an investigation into his Democratic rival Joe Biden.
Vindman was among those listening to the conversation and was so concerned that within an hour, he warned White House lawyers that the president’s actions were improper.
This, however, has led Trump and his allies to denounce him. Trump called him a “Never Trumper witness,” while Laura Ingraham of Fox News described his as “a U.S. national security official...working inside the White House, apparently against the president’ interests.”
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) suggested that Vindman fits the profile of “a significant number of bureaucrats and staff members within the executive branch [who] have never accepted President Trump as legitimate and...react by leaking to the press and participating in the ongoing effort to sabotage his policies and, if possible, remove him from office.”
Vindman told lawmakers in October, “I am a patriot, and it is my sacred duty and honor to advance and defend our country, irrespective of party or politics. I have dedicated my entire professional life to the United States of America.”
