President Trump’s firing of FBI director James Comey this week has unleashed a wave of Democratic calls for his impeachment.
Prior to this development, most Democrats in Congress appeared wary of such talk, but as Politico reports, several have begun expressing support for Trump’s removal from office.
“Evidence of Trump’s effort to obstruct justice continues to emerge. Lock HIM up?” was tweeted late last night by New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
A tweet from Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA) said, “Impeachment will happen if a handful of Republicans in Congress join Dems to put country above party. Or in 2019 after Dems win the House.”
One Democrat had raised the subject of impeachment earlier this year – California Rep. Maxine Waters. This week, she told MSNBC she believes Trump may be guilty of obstruction of justice.
According to CNN’s running list, a total of eleven Democratic elected officials have alluded to or outright called for impeachment proceedings against the president.
Trump has characterized outrage from Democrats as hypocrisy, tweeting Wednesday, “Dems have been complaining for months & months about Dir. Comey. Now that he has been fired they PRETEND to be aggrieved. Phony hypocrites!”
