According to Newsweek, Alabama Representative John Rogers (D) argued that Donald Trump’s “evidently retarded” son, Donald Trump Jr., is proof that abortion should be legal.
Rogers was criticized for remarks he made in the Alabama House of Representatives while voicing his opposition to a bill that would make abortion almost completely illegal in the state, except for when a woman’s life is at risk.
“Some kids are unwanted, so you kill them now or you kill them later,” Rogers said. "You bring them in the world unwanted, unloved, and you send them to the electric chair. So, you kill them now or you kill them later.”
Trump Jr. condemned the statements, saying: “Every Democrat running for President needs to be asked where they stand on this. The extreme turn we've seen from Dems on abortion recently is truly sickening.”
In response, Rogers said that Trump Jr. was proof that he is “right to make a scene about abortion.”
“Him being born, that’s proof right there,” he said. “That’s a very, very good defense I have for abortion. His mother should have aborted him when he was born and he wouldn’t have made that stupid statement.” He added, “He’s evidently retarded. Crazy. Donald Trump’s son, I know there’s something wrong with that boy.”
Senator Doug Jones also responded to the remarks, saying that Rogers’ rhetoric “gets more appalling each time he speaks.” He continued, “He does not speak for the people of Alabama and is in fact offending all Alabamians with his crude and reprehensible comments.”
