Conservatives Accuse AOC Of Communism Because She Pays Her Staff A Living Wage

Fox & Friends took issue with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's decision to pay her low-level staffers a living wage.

Fox and Friends co-host Pete Hegseth launched a new attack against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) this week, accusing the freshman congresswoman of socialism and communism because she pays her staff a living wage.

Ocasio-Cortez has chosen to redistribute the money appropriated to her congressional office in order to provide her entry-level staffers with a living wage.

Because she wants to pay $15 per hour to her low-level employees and has a fixed amount to pay all employees in her office, Ocasio-Cortez plans to lower the salaries of head staffers. Rather than the median pay for chief of staffs on Capitol Hill of $154,364, in her office the salary will drop to $80,000, the co-hosts reported.

This will allow Ocasio-Cortez to pay entry-level staffers salaries of $52,000.

Hegseth took issue with the decision, saying her “entry-level intern is making 52 grand while [her] chief of staff, who is a very important role in a congressional office, now is capped at 80 — as opposed to the actual market rate on Capitol Hill, which is closer to $150,000.”

“It’s actually socialism and communism on display,” Hegseth said.

Far from the first time Ocasio-Cortez has been faced with such accusations, the congresswoman responded to Hegseth via Twitter, tweeting: “The GOP is so disconnected from the basic idea that people should be paid enough to live that Fox actually thinks me paying a living wage in my office is “communism.” So the next time GOP screams “socialist,” know that’s their go-to attack for any common-sense, humane policy.”
