Conservative Icon George Will: A “Gangster Regime” Now Runs Our Country

“Today’s less serious nation is unable to… even reliably conduct elections. This is what national decline looks like.”

In an opinion for the Washington Post, George Will asserts that “for the first time in its history, [America] is pitied,” and he levels much of the blame on President Donald J. Trump.

  • Will claims that the United States “is in a downward spiral” and faces “disdainful condescension” from the rest of the world.
  • Will asserts that one reason for this are the highly disparate COVID-19 pandemic results between America and much of the rest of the developed world: “Last Sunday, Germany (population 80.2 million) had 159 new cases of covid-19; Florida (population 21.5 million) had 15,300.”
  • Another example of the Union’s decline is that it is “unable to… even reliably run elections,” citing the Hoover Institution which finds that “there has been a rising tide of voter suppression in recent U.S. elections.”
  • Will posits that the decline has gotten so serious that “worse is helpful, and worse can be confidently expected.”
  • By this Will means that the more egregious Trump’s presidency becomes, the more apparent the need for voters to remove him from office will become.
  • As an example of the “worse” that Will affirms America is seeing, he next calls the Trump administration a “gangster regime.”
  • He claims that Roger Stone “adopted the argot of B-grade mobster movies when he said he would not ‘roll on’ Donald Trump.”
  • And Trump “show[ed] gratitude for Stone’s version of omertà (the Mafia code of silence)” by commuting his sentence.

I’m an optimist at heart. I have no rebuttal for Mr. Will. Our country is resilient and I look forward to the day when the sheen on our Constitution is again clear for all the see.

It is ESSENTIAL that the clown in the Oval Office is thrown out on his ear and that people like Kanye West and Caitlyn Jenner go away. We cannot possibly survive another 4 years of The Don.

Over the past 4 decades, I've often disagreed with his opinions but have always respected that he tried to have all of the facts whether he agreed with them or not. If he, one of the fathers of American Conservatism, says that the GOP, conservatives' cult-like following of Trump, and the increasingly racist, fascist, and divisive ideology therein is a danger to America, then I tend to believe him.

George Will is a thoughtful, respected and well reputed man of great integrity who has championed true conservative issues for decades. I agree whole heatedly with his assertions. The USA is now a second rate vaudville act on the world stage and no longer a leading figure.
