Trump was apparently proud of himself for demeaning his office in front of U.S. Senators.

After word of his derogatory remarks toward nations he described as "shitholes" hit the press, President Donald Trump began enjoying what one White House official termed his "victory lap".

"President Trump spent his Thursday night phoning aides, allies and friends, asking them how they thought the 'shithole' remark was playing out in the press," CNN's Kaitlan Collins reports.

"One White House official referred to this as a 'victory lap,'" CNN adds.

Despite his alleged satisfaction with the comment, Trump eventually tried to walk back the statement, tweeting that he had used "tough" language during the immigration discussions with Congressional leaders, but not what was reported:

The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!

One congressman present during the meeting contradicted the president's claim Friday:

Friday morning Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who was in the Oval Office with President Trump and at least six GOP lawmakers, became the first and only lawmaker to denounce Trump's remarks. He also verified that Trump made those remarks, "repeatedly."
