CHURCH MEMBERS ON TRIAL FOR ASSAULTING GAY MAN, THEY CLAIM HE WAS DEMONICALLY POSSESSED

Five members of North Carolina’s Word of Faith Fellowship are on trial in North Carolina for assaulting a gay man, Matthew Fenner.

Their rationale? The accused claim that the victim was possessed by a demonic entity, thus the physical assault was warranted. 30 people allegedly attacked the man.

Following Mr. Fenner’s assault, Brooke Covington, a minister of the Church, delivered a two-hour sermon excoriating the man. The victim, 23 years old, thought he was going to die according to the Los Angeles Time.

In public testimony, Mr. Fenner claimed that Ms. Covington made note of his sexual orientation during the attack. “God said there is something wrong in your life”, he alleged she said to him.

Ms. Covington is charged with kidnapping and assault.

Former members of the church claim these types of vicious assaults against supposed sinners are part of its accepted practices.

The Word of Faith Fellowship is well known for claims of Christian persecution and past controversies.

Covington could face up to two years in prison if convicted.
