A debate between two prominent conservative Christian writers last week led to one claiming that if Bernie Sanders wins the presidential election, he literally will throw Christians to the lions.
Yahoo News reported that Sohrab Ahmari, the editor of the New York Post’s op-ed page, would not back down from the idea that Democrats actually want to exterminate Christians, even saying that traditional Christian values — like civility and decency — are “secondary” as the religious group fights for their lives.
The other conservative in the ring with Ahmari, National Review writer David French, could not have disagreed more with the 34-year-old Iranian immigrant who three years ago converted to Catholicism.
French noted that the “idea that civility should be a second order value is not biblical,” adding that Christ’s instruction to love one’s enemies and show kindness and charity “are fundamental moral obligations that have eternal resonance.”
He also appeared amused by Ahmari’s suggestion that Sanders would feed Christians to the lions, responding, “Do you think Bernie Sanders would bring the Colosseum? He doesn’t even have a plan to deal with Mitch McConnell.”
At the root of this discussion — one in which there appears to be two camps that vehemently disagree on how to address the problem — is widespread fear among conservative Christians in the U.S. that Democrats and “the left” are out to debase them, rob them of their religious freedom, and instill within American culture all manner of things that are anathema to Christianity.
Like drag queen story hour at public libraries.
Ahmari said Republicans should hold hearings on this issue, which he called evidence of a “cultural crisis and a moral emergency.”
And apparently the threat of the left — a group that Ahmari claims would end Christians’ ability to practice their beliefs — justifies shedding those supposed beliefs on their own in an effort to win the war.
