New public health guidelines released Monday by the CDC stated that fully vaccinated individuals can gather in groups.

However, these individuals are still encouraged to wear masks and maintain social distancing around non-vaccinate individuals. This is to further decrease the chance of transmission since vaccinated individuals are not technically 100 percent immune to COVID-19. Furthermore, it aims to protect those who are more susceptible to the virus or possible health implications.

“There are some activities that fully vaccinated people can begin to resume now in the privacy of their own homes,” said CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky. “Everyone—even those who are vaccinated—should continue with all mitigation strategies when in public settings.”

In the US there are currently around 30 million individuals that are fully vaccinated, or about 9% of the population, according to Johns Hopkins University.
