News that Attorney General William Barr’s review of the Russia probe has become a criminal investigation caused renewed alarm over Barr’s apparent willingness to investigate President Donald Trump’s political opponents.
Newsweek reported that #ImpeachBarr was trending on Twitter Friday morning following a New York Times report, confirmed by The Wall Street Journal, that Barr has granted John Durham — the prosecutor heading the investigation — the ability to subpoena and documents and file criminal charges.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) tweeted in a joint statement with House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA): "These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under Attorney General William Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President [Donald] Trump's political revenge.”
New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell joined in the call for Barr’s removal, tweeting, “AG Barr is our it control. Barr is trying to dismantle our justice system brick by brick solely to bodyguard trump. Barr should be impeached and stripped of his law licenses.”
Numerous others followed suit:
Barr began investigating the origins of the Russia probe in May, saying conversations he had with intelligence officials raised suspicions: "A lot of the answers have been inadequate and some of the explanations I've gotten don't hang together.”
