Senators in California passed a bill in a 33-0 vote on Thursday to allow animal owners to buy medical marijuana for their pets if a certified veterinarian gives them a recommendation, ABC reports.

The proposal would give veterinarians the same securities and regulations as doctors who give marijuana recommendations to human patients. It would also prevent the Veterinarian Medical Board from taking punitive measures against animal doctors that recommend marijuana.

Former Governor Jerry Brown last year approved a law giving veterinarians permission to discuss medical marijuana with animal owners.
