Republican Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) supports arming teachers in response to the latest school shooting. Hypothetically, this would mean a teacher could be in a position where they might have to shoot their own student(s), something that would require a degree of psychological compartmentalization that most people lack.
“I’ve spoken to teachers around Northern California who wish to have that option,” LaMalfa, a Republican, told the Record Searchlight newspaper. “We’ve got to be more creative as far as campus safety and security. We live in perilous times and we need these options to keep these campuses safe.”
LaMalfa's view presumes that teachers would be able to shoot and kill shooters, even their own students, while under the pressure of a live shooting environment.
Amanda Wilcox, legislation and policy chairwoman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said armed school staff was a bad idea. “Making a decision on when to shoot is hard for law enforcement,” Wilcox said. “To assume that a citizen is going to perform any better is not likely.
