Buttgieg Receives Money From Same Kremlin-Linked Oligarch That Funds McConnell
Democratic presidential candidate and former South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg has received campaign contributions from an influential GOP donor that has been directly linked to the Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Law&Crime.
Leonard “Len” Blavatnik, who has previously been described in the press as “The Giver,” and is a well known Republican donor. He funded President Donald Trump’s lavish inauguration festivities in 2017, providing some $1 million.
It seems that Blavatnik and his wife are shifting allegiances, as they have donated thousands of dollars to Pete for America, Inc., Buttigieg’s official campaign organization.
Ruth May, in a summer 2017 commentary for the Dallas Morning News, cited public data available via the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and from campaign finance data clearinghouse OpenSecrets and noted: “Donald Trump and the political action committees for Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Lindsey Graham, John Kasich, and John McCain accepted $7.35 million in contributions from a Ukrainian-born oligarch.”
“Mitch McConnell was the top [individual] recipient of Blavatnik’s donations, collecting $2.5 million for his GOP Senate Leadership Fund under the names of two of Blavatnik’s holding companies, Access Industries and Al Altep Holdings,” May wrote.
Yet, most problematic is Blavatnik’s documented ties to Vladimir Putin and the Russian leader’s inner circle.
“Blavatnik’s relationships with Russian oligarchs close to Putin, particularly Oleg Deripaska, should be worrisome for Trump and the six GOP leaders who took Blavatnik’s money during the 2016 presidential campaign,” May noted.
According to the FEC, Buttigieg has received an excess of $5,000--close to the maximum allowed by law.
The Blavatniks have attempted to “purchase influence” by donating the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee well over $400,000, while donating similar figures to the GOP as well.
Justin Horowitz, co-founder Men4Choice, was the first to note the former mayor’s support from the so-called “russian-linked oligarch.”
“Wow. One of the billionaires powering Pete Buttigieg’s campaign is a Russian-linked oligarch who contributed millions to Trump and GOP PACs for Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, Mitch McConnell, and Scott Walker. You can’t make this stuff up,” he said.
